Hair Extensions: Tape In vs. Sew In

Written by Jessica De Somma, Master Stylist, Owner

Are hair extensions really that addicting? You use them to add length, thickness, or color. Once you experience a full, beautiful, long head of hair extensions, you can’t go back!

It may seem overwhelming to choose from the many different methods of hair extensions. This article will help break down the pros and cons of my two favorite methods of extensions- sew ins and tape ins.

Sew Ins are on of the most coveted methods right now. They vary in thickness depending on the guest's needs. They appear as 2 or 3 long (about 12 in.) rows. The long weft of extension is sewn into the hair anchored by a row of silicone beads. They must be maintenanced every 6-8 weeks which includes taking them out and moving them up closer to the scalp. Sew ins are very comfortable; they are easy to wear in a high or low bun, and easy to wash. This method is best for very thick hair types but can also be modified with a lighter weft for fine hair. Application and maintenance take about 2.5 hours.

Tape ins are 2 inch wefts of hair that sandwich a thin section of hair and are held together by a tape. They need to be maintenanced about every 6-8 weeks which takes about 2.5 including shampoo and blowdrying time. The tape is removed with a gentle oil based tape remover. Tape in extensions can add many different colors and dimension to the hair. For most people wanting to add length and fullness, it requires about 3 to 4 packs in which you can order many different colors to create a great blend. They create long, thick hair but also shine best in discreetly adding length and fullness in short hair or bangs when cut in half.

Sew ins and tape ins are amongst some of the most popular hair extensions. There are also keratin fusions, beaded I tips, clip ins, and halo extension methods. Which one would you try?
